What To Expect At The First Speech Therapy Visit

CTSPS will work to find the best fit for your child's schedule and needs with one of our licensed and certified speech pathologists.  Understanding what to expect at the first visit with your child's therapist can help you and your child feel comfortable and excited about beginning therapy.

When You Arrive...

Sign in at the front desk to let the receptionist know you are here, and make yourself comfortable in the waiting room. As always, your child is welcome to enjoy our play room at our South office or play with the toys and books provided in the waiting room of our North office. Your child's speech pathologist will come out to meet you at your appointment time. Depending on your child's age and needs, you may want to accompany your child into the therapy room for all or part of the first session.

During the therapy session...

Using the information from the initial evaluation, your child's speech pathologist will create a Plan of Care outlining goals that target your child's specific areas of need.  The first session may include additional assessment recommended by the evaluating therapist and/or initiation of therapy activities.  Your child will participate in age-appropriate games and play-based practice of new communication skills.

Depending on the child's age and comfort, the parent or caregiver may be present during treatment. Often just having a sibling in the therapy room at the initiation of treatment provides the needed level of comfort.

After the session...

The speech pathologist will use the last portion of your child's session to talk with you about your child's goals and progress.  Every child receives a home program designed with activities you can complete with your child to encourage carryover of the skills addressed in the session.  The speech pathologist will explain the home program to you and answer any questions before you leave.

Please also check with the receptionist prior to leaving to confirm your next appointment.

What if my child is seen at school or daycare?
At times, CTSPS therapists can see your child at their private school, preschool or daycare to accommodate your family's busy schedule.  With your permission, your child's speech pathologist can communicate with the teacher at the end of sessions and will communicate with you by leaving the home program and/or written notes to update you regarding your child's progress. Email and phone calls to the speech pathologist are encouraged when you have questions or concerns.
