What to expect at Your Child's Speech Therapy Evaluation

Your child's first visit to CTSPS will likely be an evaluation. Knowing what to expect can help ease your and your child's minds about the process.

What Will Happen?

When You Arrive...

Sign in at the front desk and let the receptionist know you are here. We encourage you to arrive 15 minutes early to complete our new patient paperwork. Have a seat in the waiting room and feel free to let your child visit our play room at the South office, stocked with blocks, an activity table, and a tv with dvd player or with the toys provided in the North office waiting room. The evaluating therapist will meet you in the waiting room when it is time for your appointment.

During the Evaluation...

As a parent or guardian, your input is essential to the evaluation procedure. You are encouraged to accompany your child to the evaluation room. There, the speech pathologist will ask you questions about your child's history and determine your specific concerns. The specifics of the evaluation will be determined based on the information you provide and may include any of the following procedures: standardized testing of articulation and/or language skills, informal sampling of speech and language skills during play-based activities, an oral-mechanism examination, and trial therapy.

After the Evaluation...

The evaluating therapist will share impressions and recommendations with you regarding your child's communication skills. Recommendations might include initiation of therapy, follow-up with another specialist, or re-evaluation at a later date. If therapy is recommended and you would like to pursue services with a speech pathologist at CTSPS, you will be asked about your scheduling availability.

How Long Will The Evaluation Last?

You can expect your evaluation visit to last approximately 45 minutes to an hour.
