Speech Sound Disorders

Speech sound disorders is an umbrella term referring to any difficulty or combination of difficulties with perception, motor production, or phonological representation of speech sounds and speech segments—including phonotactic rules governing permissible speech sound sequences in a language.
Speech sound disorders can be organic or functional in nature. Organic speech sound disorders result from an underlying motor/neurological, structural, or sensory/perceptual cause. Functional speech sound disorders are idiopathic—they have no known cause.
Articulation Therapy
CTSPS, Inc. uses multiple therapeutic strategies to achieve the highest degree of speech intelligibility given an individual’s specific issues.
The illustration demonstrates the lingual to palatal position required for the production of specific speech sounds to improve pediatric and adult articulation. Specific tongue to palate contact is required to produce clear, articulate speech. The accurate analysis of tongue, lip and jaw movement is critical in implementing appropriate therapeutic strategies.
Our Speech-Language Pathologists are trained to consider developmental issues affecting acquisition of differentiated tongue, jaw and lip movement during speech and the age of speech sound acquisition in pediatric populations. CTSPS, Inc. therapists use a similar approach with adult patients whose speech intelligibility may be affected by neurological conditions or surgery.
By employing the use of standardized testing (for comparison to others), phonological analysis of conversational speech (evaluation of specific speech sounds when produced as part of conversation), and analysis of sequenced musculature movement required for articulation (the evaluation of movement of the tongue, lips and jaw during speech sound production).
