Your Child’s First Therapy Visit

CTSPS will work to find the best fit for your child's schedule and needs with one of our licensed and certified speech pathologists.  Understanding what to expect at the first visit with your child's therapist can help you and your child feel comfortable and excited about beginning therapy.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE

Sign in at the front desk to let the receptionist know you’re here, and make yourself comfortable in the waiting room. Your child's speech pathologist will come out to meet you at your appointment time. Depending on your child's age and needs, you may want to accompany your child into the therapy room for all or part of the first therapy session.

DURING THE THERAPY SESSION

Using the information from the initial evaluation, your child's speech pathologist will create a Plan of Care, outlining goals that target your child's specific areas of need. The first session may include additional assessment recommended by the evaluating therapist and/or initiation of therapy activities. Your child will participate in age-appropriate games and play-based practice of new communication skills.

Depending on the child's age and comfort, the parent or caregiver may be present during treatment. Often just having a sibling in the therapy room at the initiation of treatment provides the needed level of comfort.

AFTER THE SESSION

The speech pathologist will use the last portion of your child's session to talk with you about your child's goals and progress. Every child receives a home program designed with activities you can complete with your child to encourage carryover of the skills addressed in the session. The speech pathologist will explain the home program to you and answer any questions before you leave.

Please also check with the receptionist prior to leaving to confirm your next appointment and to pay any balance due.
